  • On the Art of Writing

    Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch

Paperback (Dover Publications, Feb. 10, 2006)
"The art of writing is a living business," declares Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch in the Preface to this classic. "Literature is not a mere science, to be studied; but an art, to be practiced. Great as is our own literature, we must consider it as a legacy to be improved . . . if we persist in striving to write well, we can easily resign to other nations all the secondary fame."Renowned as a critic, teacher, and educational reformer, Quiller-Couch delivered a series of lectures at the University of Cambridge in 1913-14. His subjects--the artistic and vital nature of language as well as the skills needed to convey and receive the written word--remain as timeless as his advice. This book contains the eminent scholar's remarks from those lectures on the practice of writing, the difference between verse and prose, the use of jargon, the history of English literature, the ways in which English literature is taught at the university, and the importance of style. The principles and practical guidelines he sets forth in this volume offer aspiring writers an enduring source of guidance.

  • The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales

    Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, Edmund Dulac

Hardcover (Calla Editions, Sept. 14, 2011)
This sumptuous volume is a welcome follow-up to the earlier Calla publication of Dulac's Stories from Hans Christian Andersen. Edmund Dulac was second only to Arthur Rackham in his sensitivity to the world of fairy tales, and his style is at once exotic and elegant. The present edition contains four tales: "The Sleeping Beauty," "Blue Beard," "Cinderella," and "Beauty and the Beast" in artful retelling, but the main feature of the book is the generous offering of 30 full-page color plates in Dulac's inimitable style. Additional design elements make this Calla edition a keepsake for readers and collectors alike.

  • The Sleeping Beauty

    Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, June 27, 2018)
The Sleeping Beauty retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. Sleeping Beauty, or Little Briar Rose, also titled in English as The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods, is a classic fairy tale which involves a beautiful princess, a sleeping enchantment, and a handsome prince. The tale was originally written by Charles Perrault. The version collected by the Brothers Grimm was an orally transmitted version of the original literary tale published by Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passé in 1697. This in turn was based on Sun, Moon, and Talia by Italian poet Giambattista Basile (published posthumously in 1634), which was in turn based on one or more folk tales. The earliest known version of the story is found in the narrative Perceforest, composed between 1330 and 1344.
